Dr. Mac Bernd
Superintendent of Arlington ISD

Dr. Mac Bernd

Dr. Mac Bernd came to Arlington in 1998 to lead AISD as superintendent. He directs the operations of the district that includes more than 63,000 students and 8,000 employees.

Since arriving in Arlington, Dr. Bernd spearheaded the passage of a $261.68 million bond program, the largest package in the district's history. Under his leadership, the AISD was recently granted the International Baccalaureate World School Diploma Programme at two AISD high schools.

Dr. Bernd came to Arlington with 11 years of experience as superintendent in three school districts. His joined the AISD after a five-year term at Newport Mesa Unified School District in Newport Beach, Calif., a demographically diverse district of 21,000 students. Previous experience includes superintendencies in Little Rock School District in Little Rock, Ark., and in San Marcos Unified School District, San Diego County, Calif.

A 35-year veteran in education, Dr. Bernd began his career as a teacher in Brighton, Colo. He later held posts as high school assistant principal and then principal in Greeley, Colo. In 1983, he moved to Phoenix, where he was Administrator for Effective Schools and Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Dr. Bernd earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a master's degree and a doctorate from the University of Colorado.
